ANNUAL REPORT 23/24
BRINGING ENGINEERING TO LIFE
Strengthening professional regulation

A strong regulatory system benefits everyone – engineers, regulators and the public. Many engineers aspire to register as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) to advance their career and unlock international opportunities, while regulators rely on CPEng to sign off on certain projects, especially those involving public safety.
A change in government in 2023 has meant widespread professional reform through legislation is no longer being prioritised by lawmakers. In response, as the Registration Authority for CPEng, we refocused our efforts to improve CPEng within the existing legal framework.
To support these changes, we’ve consulted with you on improving the CPEng Rules. Submissions have been analysed and the CPEng Board will make a final decision in early 2025. From March 2025, work to draft, publish and implement the new Rules will begin so they can take effect on 1 January 2026.
Significant progress has also been made on operational improvements in 2024. This includes new guidance for assessments, an improved complaints process, and the launch of a dedicated Registration Authority website and CPEng Register.
Key improvements were also made to the assessment process itself, such as enhanced referee requirements, expanded capacity, and improved training and support for assessors. A new self-assessment tool helps engineers and their mentors gauge readiness to apply for CPEng by clarifying competency expectations.
The new Registration Authority website means you can now access everything you might need to get registered or reassessed as a CPEng in one place. The site’s new register provides a streamlined and filterable directory, making it easier for the public, regulators and professionals to connect with a CPEng by their practice field, service region or registration type.
