He kura nā Rātā, He kura pūkaha – celebrating Māori in engineering
Engineering New Zealand is committed to embedding Te Ao Māori into engineering practice through our Kimihia Rangahaua strategy. In September, we took a significant step towards meaningful change in this space as the engineering community came together for He kura nā Rātā, He kura pūkaha – a ground-breaking two-day wānanga and the most significant celebration of Māori in engineering to date.
Hosted by Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau, in partnership with Te Moana Nui A Kiwa Whakapūkahatanga Ihi - South Pacific Professional Engineering Excellence (SPPEEx), the wānanga explored how mātauranga Māori and engineering expertise can be woven together for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
Grounded in whanaungatanga, the wānanga reflected on the unique contributions of Māori to the profession and sought to drive forward a future where Māori engineers thrive.
Reflecting on the past, speakers shared kōrero on the legacy of Māori engineers, the foundations of mātauranga Māori and the enduring values that continue to shape engineering today.
Exploring the present, panelists discussed the realities of leading and collaborating as Māori engineers within our complex and rapidly evolving world. They highlighted the importance of tikanga, identity and bicultural partnerships in strengthening the profession.
Looking to the future, the conversation shifted to the next generation of Māori engineers, the role of innovation, and the opportunities ahead to grow a profession that honours both technical excellence and cultural heritage.
A highlight of the wānanga was the Te Mana Kiwi SPPEEx Awards. More than 100 attendees came together to celebrate three exceptional contributors, each recognised with a carved hoe taonga reflecting one of the themes of wānanga.
